From the Sovereign Grace Ministries Blog a post featuring video tours of the libraries of Ligon Duncan, Albert Mohler, Mark Dever, C.J. Mahaney, Thabiti Anyabwile, and R.C. Sproul. My initial reaction to viewing these videos was, “Wow!”, quickly followed by bemusement and the sins of envy, covetousness and self-righteousness.
To be fair, these guys are all gifted teachers, preachers, scholars and have been leading their respective ministries for many years. They have huge influence in the evangelical Christian subculture and clearly do use the resources available in their libraries. Books are the tools of their trade, like my own father who is a builder and has the equivalent of a two-car garage as a workshop full of tools and machines necessary to do his job.
Continuing that analogy, I am a builder’s labourer. My tool allowance is meager (in fact it is skimmed from our grocery budget!) and I don’t get a workshop — my space is the upturned wheelbarrow on which to sit for smoko.
Note the evidence of the multi-purpose nature of my workspace and the ‘in-progress’ stacks of books that I’m currently attempting to find time to read. The current focus of my studies is the sermon for this Sunday, Romans 1:28-32, which I am procrastinating on by writing this blog post! (It could be a late night).
