Shan-Tai prayer month, day 21
In the West we enjoy a culture which has been transformed by the influence of Christianity over two thousand years. But Christianity is not the only influence to have shaped Western cultures and it would be foolish to think that a culture shaped by faith in Christ would inevitably be similar to our own. The ancient Hebrew culture was very foreign to my own, yet in many ways would have been more aligned with Christian ethics than my own culture is.
For Shan Christian a big challenge is to have wisdom to know which elements of their own culture can be retained and transformed by the Gospel, and which elements need to be rejected as opposing Christ. God created the richness of cultural variations and has called people from all cultures to worship Christ together. Therefore we all lose if Shan Christians reject their own culture thinking that this is necessary to be a disciple of Jesus.
- Believers to be bold in embracing their culture in a way that is faithful to Christ (Hebrews 3:5–6).
- Festivals and traditions such as Kan Taw (water festival) to be door openers for people to come to faith (John 7:38).
- Shoot on sight (Karen villagers flee the Burmese army)
